The French Open is referred to as Roland Garros. It is the second Grand Slam tournament during the year. It takes place in Paris, France. It is the only Grand Slam tennis tournament that is played on a clay court.
One reason why the clay court is important is that clay is harder to play than other courts. Many professionals have skipped the French Open because it was difficult for them to play on and get a win on the clay court. One player who has been very successful at the French Open is Rafael Nadal.

Clay courts are a lot slower playing surfaces than the other courts. The tournaments cause players to have longer matches and the clay courts are more physically intense.

Roland Garros is the name of the stadium where the tournament is played. The French Open takes place at the end of May and goes through early June. This ends the clay-court season.

The French Open is one of the most unique among the Grand Slams and it has origins in two different tournaments. It began as an international amateur tennis tournament.

In 1953, the French Open was played on an indoor wooden court. In the 1960s, the tournament went to clay courts. Rafael Nadal is the king of the clay courts. He holds the most records for French Open titles. He has won nine times. He has never lost at the French Open.

The youngest player to win the French Open was Michael Chang. He was 17 years old when he won. Monica Seles won for the females and she was only 16 when she won. Pete Sampras was one of the best players who were never able to win a French Open title.

Roland Garros stadium was built in 1928. It is located in the southern part of the Bois de Boulogne in Paris’s 16th area. The stadium has 20 courts and is on 21 acres of land. Over 15,000 fans can watch the tournaments. The tournaments very intimate as well because the bleachers are stacked deeply, and fans sit close to one another.

There are some traditions at the French Open as well. There are brooms that are used to sweep the dust from the courts and the court sweepers are just as special as the ball boys. Another great thing about the French Open is the smell of Nutella that floats in the air.

Some of the best people-watching happens at the French Open as well. Since Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world, there is no dress code at this event and Panama hats are very popular there. You never know what you will see at the French Open.

If you want to visit Paris and the French Open, make sure you plan ahead. The tickets go on sale in March and they are cheaper during pre-order. Ticket prices go up as the tournaments get closer.

Paris is warm and sunny in late May and early June. When you go to the French Open, make sure that you wear light, breathable clothing, make sure you bring a hat and sunglasses. Look at what the locals are wearing.
