2.2. Check the MBOX backup file location
When Gmail is backed up, the actual backup file is in [.mbox] format. For the next step, I’ll move this file to a location where it’s easy to find and access.
➊ First, go to the download path, and then you can check the compressed file in [takeout-XXX] format (specified format).
➋ And then right-click on this takeout file ❪ ➊ ❫ to expand the menu.
➌ In the menu, use [Extract] ❪ ➋ ❫ to decompress the file and move it to an easily accessible location. In the description, I’ll go to the desktop.
3. Viewing the backup file with ‘Thunderbird’ 지메일 백업
You will need additional tools such as Thunderbird to view the mbox file above. If you are not using Thunderbird, please proceed with the steps below after installing the Thunderbird client on your computer and linking a basic account.
3.1. Register backup file ( MBOX ) file to Thunderbird JFactory
You need to register the Gmail backup file (.mbox) created earlier in the Thunderbird local directory.
3.1.1. Check Thunderbird local directory location
➊ First, run the Thunderbird client and then right-click on the registered account ❪ ➊ ❫ to expand the menu.
➋ And then I will go to [Settings] ❪ ➋ ❫ in the menu.
➌ You will be taken to the account settings screen, and next, in the navigation window located on the left, you will be moved to your personal folder ❪ ➊ ❫.
➍ In [Local Directory] ❪ ➋ ❫ in the message storage section, you can check the local directory location of the mail account registered in Thunderbird. In general, if it is installed by default without customization, it is in the following location.
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\qelc7c6q.default-release\Mail\Local Folders
3.1.2. Move the MBOX file to a local directory
➊ First, copy ( Ctrl + C ) and paste ( Ctrl + V ) or move the backup file (.mbox) moved to the desktop.
3.2. Backup file can be viewed
After registering the file, you can check all the contents that have been backed up in Gmail in the Thunderbird client.
➊ First of all, if you go back to the Thunderbird client, you can see that a folder called mbox ❪ ➊ ❫ is created under your personal folder, including spam and trash.
➋ Then, if you select the folder with the mouse, you can ❪ ➋ ❫ check all the backed up emails.
💡 Attached files are also backed up with the above backup data, so you can download them the same way when viewing with Thunderbird.
4. Concluding the article
So, in today’s blog post, I briefly summarized the overall process of viewing the mbox file created by backing up Gmail with the Thunderbird mail client.
If you have a large amount of Gmail or need to keep it separate, you can consider a backup. It is ironic that the backed up files cannot be restored by Gmail itself.
However, if you use Thunderbird, which is provided for free, it can be easily restored. So, it seems like an appropriate alternative if necessary.
I tried to make it as easy as possible, but I don’t know how. I’ll end it here today!! ૮ • ᴥ • ა
