Low-emission vehicles, what benefits can you receive?
1. Low-emission vehicles
Low-emission vehicles literally refer to vehicles that do not emit substances that pollute the air, or are classified according to the amount of air pollutants they emit. They are divided into types 1, 2, and 3.

Class Vehicle Type
Eco-friendly vehicles such as type 1 electric vehicles, hydrogen vehicles, solar vehicles, etc.
Eco-friendly vehicles such as type 2 hybrid vehicles and plug hybrid vehicles
3 types of LPG vehicles, gasoline vehicles (emissions below a certain level)

2. Benefits of low-emission vehicles
There are various benefits of low-emission vehicles. My vehicle is also a hybrid vehicle, so I can receive many benefits, but I especially take advantage of the ‘50% discount on public parking lot fees.’ It especially shines in airport parking lots. When you travel, you often use valet parking. It is cheaper than valet parking, so it is very convenient because you do not have to hire valet parking separately.

▶ 50% discount on public parking lot fees
It is being implemented by local governments across the country, including the metropolitan area, and offers discounts of 30% to 50% for low-emission vehicles.

※ Parking fee discount rates vary depending on the low-pollution level and each local government, so please check.

▶ 50% discount on airport parking fees at Incheon Airport, Gimpo Airport, etc.
You can receive a 50% discount for Type 1 and Type 2, and a 20% discount for Type 3 at 15 airports across the country, including Incheon Airport and Gimpo Airport.

▶ Congestion toll exemption for Namsan Tunnels 1 and 3
In Namsan Tunnels 1 and 3, a toll fee of 2,000 won is charged for the purpose of relieving traffic congestion. Types 1 and 2 are exempted, and type 3 is discounted by 50%, but unfortunately, it is abolished in April 2021.

▶ Subway transfer parking lot discount
In Seoul, you can receive 3 hours of free parking at the subway transfer parking lot. There is also an 80% discount for overpayments, so you won’t have to worry about using it when commuting to work.

▶50% discount on highway tolls
You can receive a 50% discount on highway tolls until the end of 2024, but this benefit only applies to electric and hydrogen vehicles, which are low-emission class 1 vehicles, so it is a bit disappointing for class 2 and 3 vehicles. Also, please note that the discount is only available when you pass with the Hi-Pass.

▶Tax reduction
Reduction in individual consumption tax and acquisition tax is a benefit only for eco-friendly cars. This benefit is for a period of time and can be extended, so you should check when purchasing a car.

3. Whether benefits for low-emission vehicles will be abolished(?)
By current standards, electric vehicles, small-sized vehicles, hybrids, LPG, and gasoline vehicles are classified as low-emission vehicles, but in each phase, only vehicles that emit little air pollutants, such as electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles, are classified as low-emission vehicles. If this happens, the transition from low-emission cars ==> zero-emission cars will likely take place.

First, three types of low-emission vehicles are scheduled to be excluded from 2024, and plans are being made to exclude hybrid vehicles classified as type 2 from the list of low-emission vehicles as early as 2025 or 2026. If this happens, tax reductions will only be available to electric and hydrogen vehicles, which are currently type 1 low-emission vehicles.

Is my car also a low-emission vehicle? Two ways to look up
Now that you know the benefits, how do you know if your car is a low-emission vehicle? You may be thinking, but usually when purchasing a car, young men even register low-emission vehicles, but most young men do not do that.

1. Online search on the comprehensive zero-emission vehicle website
Search for ‘zero-emission vehicle integrated website’ in the search bar of your smartphone or PC, or click to access the link. Since you do not need to log in separately, please click on the frequently visited service – Check my car is pollution-free on the main screen. Afterwards, if you enter the vehicle registration number or vehicle identification number and search, you can find out what class of low-emission vehicle your vehicle is.

2. My vehicle emission certification number
You can also check by opening the bonnet of your vehicle. When you open the bonnet, there will usually be a sticker like the one below attached to the top. It’s written in a complicated way, but you don’t need anything else, just check the authentication number shown in the photo. You only need to check the 7th number from the front of the authentication number. If the number is 1, it indicates type 1, if the number is 2, it indicates type 2, and if the number is 3, it indicates type 3 low-emission. From 4, it will be a regular vehicle.

Register a low-emission vehicle and receive a sticker
Normally, when registering a vehicle after purchasing a vehicle, a sticker is issued immediately through a computerized inquiry. However, since we checked separately and found out whether our car was a low-emission vehicle, we had to visit the local government in charge, register, obtain a sticker, and attach it to the vehicle to receive the benefits. You can probably get it. The process is very simple. If you visit your local government or vehicle registration office with your ID and vehicle registration card, it can be issued within 5 minutes at no additional cost.

If you have been issued a sticker, please attach it to the bottom or top of the windshield on the driver’s side in a visible place so as not to interfere with your view while driving. When leaving the parking lot, the manager must affix the vehicle to a clearly visible area so that they recognize it as a low-emission vehicle and immediately provide a discount. Or, ‘How many low-polluting species!!’ You must shout. If it is an unmanned payment machine, you must press the call button and state that it is a low-emission vehicle to receive a discount, so keep this in mind!!

Conclusion
So far, I have looked into the benefits of low-emission vehicles, whether my vehicle is a low-emission vehicle, and even issued stickers. I hope you can check your vehicle and enjoy the various benefits of low-emission vehicles.
