4. Homeplus Overview
Homeplus is a large discount store brand. In September 1997, Samsung C&T opened its first branch in Chilseong-dong, Buk-gu, Daegu. Homeplus was operated with half investment from Samsung C&T and British Tesco. Afterwards, during Samsung’s restructuring, Samsung C&T sold most of its shares to Tesco, making it a foreign company 100% operated by Tesco for a while. However, in May 2008, E-Land acquired the store and boldly expanded Homeplus Express, a small store and corporate supermarket brand, expanding to 123 large stores and 209 small stores as of February 2011. Homeplus’ catchphrase is a plus for saenghwang. no see. There are approximately 150 branches nationwide.

5. Homeplus details
Homeplus expanded its stores in a different way than other large discount stores. Homeplus opened its first store in Daegu Metropolitan City. This is a different strategy from other large discount stores in Korea. Unlike the expansion of our business area targeting metropolitan areas with more dense populations, we started with a focus on non-metropolitan areas. As a result, we were able to avoid competition by not overlapping with E-Mart, which had opened many branches in the metropolitan area, and were able to gain an upper hand in the Yeongnam area in the early stages. Homeplus is said to have the fewest number of stores compared to total floor area among the countries where Tesco operates and the highest sales compared to other countries. Homeplus planned a department store business following the discount store business and proceeded to the planning stage, but due to unfavorable views within the UK headquarters and Korean branch, the plan did not progress to the implementation stage.
