The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization implemented the ‘Digital Tourism Resident Card’ project on a pilot basis only in Pyeongchang and Okcheon, North Chungcheong Province last year with the purpose of raising interest in areas with declining populations and contributing to revitalizing the local economy through tourism. This year, a total of 9 local governments, including ▲ Yeongdo-gu, Busan ▲ Ganghwa, Incheon ▲ Jeongseon, Gangwon ▲ Danyang, North Chungcheong Province ▲ Taean, South Chungcheong Province ▲ Gochang, Jeollabuk-do ▲ Shinan, Jeollanam-do ▲ Goryeong, Gyeongbuk ▲ Geochang, Gyeongnam, will be promoted in a total of 11 regions.
The ‘Digital Tourist Resident Card’ is an honorary resident card issued by the Korea Tourism Organization’s ‘Every Corner of Korea’ mobile app that provides travel information, and by using the QR code, you can use the QR code to purchase various items, including admission tickets to local tourist attractions, accommodations, food and drinks, and experiences. This is a system that allows you to receive discounts on travel amenities and experience programs.
In these 11 regions, you can receive a total of 200 discount benefits. 30% discount on Balwangsan Mountain tourist cable car in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, 30% discount on lodging at traditional culture experience center in Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, up to 20% discount on 4 hotels in Yeongdo-gu, Busan, 10% discount on weekday lodging at Elijah Resort in Ganghwa-gun, Incheon, skiing at High1 Resort water park in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do 30-50% discount on rental gondolas, 50% discount on Danuri Aquarium in Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province, 10% discount on Cheongsan Arboretum in Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province, 25% discount on Seokjeong Hot Springs Spa in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, 20-60% discount on Eldorado Resort in Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Daegaya in Goryeong-gun, Gyeongbuk This includes a 50% discount on entrance fees to the living village and free tourist taxi rides in Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do once a year.
Regional discount information can be found on the Korea Tourism Organization’s Every Corner of Korea website. To receive discount benefits, visit the area, scan the QR code provided at the facility or company providing the discount, download the Everywhere in Korea app, sign up as a member, and a digital tourist identification card and discount certificate will be issued. Digital tourist ID cards can be issued in advance at websites located in every corner of Korea, and events commemorating the opening of the digital tourist ID service can also be found on the website.
As a result of the digital tourist resident card pilot project, the number of digital tourist resident card issuers in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do and Okcheon, North Chungcheong Province in just 7 months from October 2022 to April this year reached about 58,000, equivalent to 65% of the settlement population in the two regions. In addition, the number of issuers who received discounts by visiting the region was 12,870, or 22% of the issuers, showing that the digital tourism resident card is very effective in encouraging actual visits to the region and tourism consumption.
Kwon Young-mi, head of the Regional Balanced Tourism Team at the Corporation, said, “As a result of the pilot project, the digital tourism resident card received a high response from both tourists and local governments visiting the region, contributing to revitalizing areas with declining populations through tourism. This year, we have expanded to 9 additional regions.” “We will significantly expand the target area next year so that the digital tourism resident card can establish itself as a representative project to revive the region,” he said.
